Businessmen ‘funding terrorist groups’ make millions off Dubai properties

Businessmen accused of funding terrorist groups have been avoiding sanctions and making millions secretly trading in Dubai properties, The Times can reveal.

At least 19 people who are now sanctioned by the United States for financing Iran, or its proxy groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, have purchased £55 million of property in the Gulf state since 2006.

Leaked records show that 16 of these people have been able to buy, sell or rent Dubai properties in their own names after they were sanctioned, apparently without the intervention of Emirati authorities.

People who are sanctioned by the US are barred from making any dollar transactions, which should shut them out of most of the global financial system.
