Chaos erupts in New Caledonia as France declares state of emergency

The French Government has declared a state of emergency after riots and ensuing chaos in New Caledonia.

The riots have forced French President Emmanuel Macron to send 500 officers to assist the 1,800 officers who have struggled to regain order.

President Macron’s order comes following days of chaos, which left four dead, 300 injured and at least 130 arrests.

The protests began after a constitutional reform granted people who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years can now vote in an election.

The reform angered indigenous locals as many are concerned “their voice will now be diluted,” according to the Herald Sun.
