Double murder suspects arrested by off-duty officer

Police at Kopanong have opened a double murder case following a shooting incident reported early Sunday (12/05) morning at Saliva Square.

“Members arrived at the scene and found bodies of two males with gunshot wounds lying outside of a house. A third victim was shot on the right hand but survived,” said Saps spokesperson Lt. Col. Thabo Covane.

The 58-year-old female survivor identified the two assailants responsible for the shooting that killed two males, aged 28 and 40. During the crime scene investigation, four spent cartridges were collected.

Sergeant Thabiso Shadrack Ntsaku, who was on leave, received information about a location often visited by one of the suspects.

“The sergeant of the Public Order Police Unit in Bloemfontein took his bicycle and started riding in the area to collect more information. Later during the day, the sergeant spotted the vehicle usually driven by one of the suspects at a local car wash in Freedom Square,” stated Covane.

Ntsaku mobilised a reaction team from his unit and the first suspect, Steven Ndaka (46), also known as Ghost, was arrested. Ndaka appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 14 May.

Lt.Col. Covane added: “Sergeant Ntsaku continued with his bicycle patrols yesterday and traced the second suspect to an address in Freedom West. He immediately sought backup from the Anti-Gang Unit and the second suspect was found hiding underneath a bed.”

Following up on the received information, members of the Public Order Police Unit in Bloemfontein recovered two handguns; a 9mm Retay G19L, and a 9mm Retay Mod 92. However, police are still searching for the firearm used in the murders. The second 37-year-old suspect is set to appear in court soon.
