An electrician of the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley succumbed to his injuries after sustaining severe burn wounds from an explosion in a substation in the city.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi confirmed that Enrico Jose Convivious of the electrical department passed away on Tuesday morning, 14 May, at a local private hospital.

His three colleagues who were with him in the substation were still in hospital on Wednesday afternoon, but out of danger.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to our late colleague’s wife, Bianca, three kids, parents, siblings and extended family,” Mothibi said.

On Wednesday morning the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, supported by the municipality’s chaplains, led one of many staff prayer sessions to follow in honouring the life and times of their departed colleague who had joined the electrical department in 2016 from the building maintenance section.

Mothibi said the executive mayor, Kagisho Sonyoni, accompanied by councillors, visited the three injured colleagues in hospital and will also be visiting the bereaved family.

The four colleagues were attending to a cable fault at the Hercules Street substation at around 09:00 on Monday when the explosion occurred.

Intensive cleaning of the substation unfolded on Monday evening, as the explosion involved the spillage of oil.

They were rushed to hospital for immediate medical attention for their burn injuries.

The Department of Labour conducted an assessment at the substation, after which it was handed back to the municipality for repair work to unfold.

Mothibi said intensive cleaning of the substation unfolded on Monday evening, as the explosion involved the spillage of oil. Since then, a new ring main unit has also been installed.
