Metro Police’s bicycle unit pedalling to success

To increase police visibility in the City Centre, the Metro Police has a bicycle patrol unit.

These officers bring a dynamic presence to the streets, fostering community engagement and promoting safety in areas where traditional vehicles may not reach.

The bicycle unit is part of the city’s strategic crime prevention initiatives which aim to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

Metro Police spokesperson, Col Boysie Zungu, said, “The visibility of the Metro Police bicycle unit is not just about being seen, it is about being present. Our officers on bicycles are more than just a symbol of law enforcement, they are ambassadors of safety and accessibility in the community.”

These include:

  • Appointment of more than 600 officers from November 2023 to March 2024.
  • Approval of the smart policing system.
  • Handing over 62 new patrol vehicles.
  • Promoting the bicycle unit for enhanced police visibility.
  • The recent promotion of 11 colonels.

“The Durban Metro Police department continues to increase its visibility, ensuring the safety and security of the city’s residents and visitors,” concluded Col Zungu.
