UNEMPLOYMENT continues to be a challenge in Mzansi, with a noticeable increase in the rate.

The Western Cape, North West, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo are among the provinces most affected, finding themselves at the bottom of the list.

The Free State’s unemployment rate remained unchanged. However, provinces like KZN, Gauteng, and the Northern Cape are seeing better days, with employment opportunities knocking on their doors.

KZN leads with a significant increase of 35 000 jobs compared to the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024. Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) shared this information on Tuesday, 14 May highlighting the tough employment landscape in the country.

The official unemployment rate is now at 32,9%, up by 0,8 percentage points in the first quarter of 2024 from the last quarter of 2023.

Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey also shows an increase of 22 000 employed persons, reaching 16,7 million in the first quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, the number of people not economically active for reasons other than discouragement dropped by 214 000 to 13,1 million.

Discouraged work-seekers decreased slightly by 1 000. The formal sector saw an increase of 56 000 jobs in the first quarter, while the informal sector experienced a decrease of 100 000 jobs during the same period.

Industries contributing to the net employment increase include trade (109 000), manufacturing (99 000), transport (39 000), agriculture (21 000), and mining (9 000).

However, losses were seen in community and social services (122 000), construction (106 000), finance (50 000), and utilities (17 000), according to Stats SA.
