SA should allow private sector involvement in water, power transmission

The recent decline in Eskom’s power cuts is partially attributed to the steep increase in renewable energy plants and rooftop solar installations coming online.

Private investment in utility-scale renewable energy, especially solar power generation, has been a key driver of more electricity supply. The government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (Reipppp) has lured about R286bn of private investment to the country’s electricity sector.

The success of the Reipppp is its one-stop-shop approach to receiving, adjudicating, and awarding bids for the construction and connection to the grid of renewable energy plants. The programme has seen 6,180 megawatts (MW) of capacity added to the country’s grid by the end of December 2023, according to the office responsible for the programme.
