WATCH | Joburg school in mourning after 2 pupils die a week apart

The family of a matric pupil who died during a classmate’s memorial service is still in shock.

Katlego Seshoka collapsed on the grounds of David Makhubo High School in Kaalfontein, Gauteng, last Thursday.

“The only thing keeping me strong is my family and their prayers,” Ester Seshoka told News24.

She is the 17-year-old’s mother.

Several unanswered questions

Mapula Sepahane said when her nephew left for school in the morning, he showed no signs of ill health.

She added the plan for the day was to attend a schoolmate’s memorial service.

However, somewhere during the morning, the plan changed.

“Katlego and his friends decided not to attend the memorial service and played soccer instead,” Sepahane told News24.

After some time, Katlego took a break on the sidelines.

“He fell off his chair and started having what looked like a seizure,” Sepahane said.

Panicked, his teammates sought help.

He was a good boy

“One of the pupils ran to get Katlego’s mother. When she arrived at the school, Katlego was already dead,” said Sepahane.

The family said Katlego was a “good boy” who was a people person.

Seshoka added:

Every day is different. I can’t tell you how I am coping because, honestly, I don’t understand what I am feeling right now.

In a statement, the Department of Education said the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding Katlego’s death.

“All efforts are being made to understand the sequence of events that led to this heart-rending incident,” it added.
